Many families in Fundo are unable to provide school uniform for their children, but this need not be an obstacle that prevents them being in school. The children take a lot of pride in their uniform, and the Headteacher encourages them always to wear it (but they are not turned away if not). Our aim is for each child to have 2 sets of uniform, so that they still have something to wear when one is being washed. White and royal blue are the school's designated colours, with the white and grey uniform as a second set for the children. The uniform is provided in 2 different ways:
A tailoring group in Fundo teaches skills to local ladies. Alongside making items they can sell for a small income, they also make uniforms for the children. The Fundo Foundation has recently transported 4 new sewing machines to this group to aid them in their work and expand their capacity.
Through a partnership with a UK school that was changing its uniform, large quantities of their previous uniform was kindly donated and has been shipped to Uganda. This included shirts and blouses, T-shirts and polo shirts, skirts, shorts and trousers, as well as sports kits and quite a lot of shoes. The Fundo School logo is printed on the shirts and blouses using a local business in Uganda.
The photos show members of the tailoring group, some of the uniform shipment on arrival, and polo-shirts, skirts and shorts being given out to the children.
Not many of the children have proper shoes to wear. One team member who visited Fundo described his experience of leading a kicking game with a rugby ball with a group of children. He very quickly realised he was the only one without sore feet as he was wearing trainers but the children all had bare feet!
