Can you open a door for young people from Fundo to go to secondary school?
As a charity, our two main streams of fundraising are for improving education at Fundo Primary and for sponsoring young people for places at secondary school. For many who live in remote areas of Uganda, continuing in education beyond primary school is simply not an option available to them. The Fundo Foundation is working to open up opportunities for secondary school education by funding places for young people every year. There is no shortage of families in need of this sponsorship and so we are seeking pepole who would like to give into our sponsorship scheme to make this possible.
A recent news article reported that the Primary Leaving Exam results in the Ma'di Okollo District were the worst in Uganda in 2025. Can you be part of helping us to change this?
2023 We sponsored 10 students for secondary school.
2024 We expanded the number being supported to 30.
2025 We accepted 10 new students, taking the total to 40.
2026 This year promises to see further expansion as 18 children passed the Primary Leaving Exam at Fundo School and would like to take up a place at secondary school.
Whilst the Ugandan Universal Education Policy is designed to provide free secondary education, the reality is that most schools have to charge some tuition fees, and then there is the cost of books, learning materials, uniform, and medical check-ups. For those in more remote areas, they must also factor in travel or boarding. All this makes it unaffordable for many. For children in Fundo, the nearest secondary schools are at Rhino Camp, approximately 20km on dirt roads, or the nearest town with secondary schools is Arua which is 2-hour drive. This means amost all young people frm Fundo will board at secondary school during term time.
Our trustess have good relationships with the secondary schools in the district. We are in contact with the teachers and staff and visit the schools regularly to support the students we sponsor.
If you would like to become a supporter, please give whatever you are comfortable with, whether one of the options below or an alternative amount. Thank you.
£15 per month will enable us to grow our sponsorship scheme so that more young people can be offered a place at secondary school.
£30 per month covers the average cost for a young person to go to secondary school, opening up a place for another promising student from Fundo.
£60 per month supports 2 young people to obtain a secondary school education.
It costs on average £120 per term for secondary education. In a country where the average annual income is £1,680, and many earn far below this, it is not difficult to understand how this is a limiting factor for parents to send their children to secondary school. Donating to our scheme gives individuals the opportunity to continue their education when they might otherwise drop out of school during or after primary school. For those who do drop out, the alternatives for them may be early marriage and pregnancy or drug and alcohol abuse, with few employment opportunities without an education.
Students are carefully selected for the sponsorship scheme by our Uganda-based trustees, who assess their financial need and their ability to flourish at secondary school. Parents are encouraged to contribute what they can which means the individual sponsorship will usually be in partnership with the families. If you think you could help to fund this year's pool of sponsored students, please complete the form below. Thank you.
Those who give will receive a sponsorship certificate and free Fundo Foundation wristbands. You will receive regular email updates about the scheme and stories from some of the individuals who are benefitting. This could be such a rewarding experience for you, and if you have children in your family, so beneficial for them to learn about the school life of younger people in a very different context to their own. The graph illustrates how the opportunity to go to secondary school is providing the incentive for children to complete Primary School.
Molly's Story
Molly's son is being sponsored through the Foundation Foundation to attend Manibe Secondary School. They live in Fundo and he went to Fundo School.
Molly attended the Fundo Skills Training Program in tailoring. She did very well and due to her commitment, she was appointed as the school tailor and leader of the tailoring group. She borrowed a sewing machine so that she could start a small business at home, and began to save some money to purchase her own machine and support her son at school. With support from generous donors, we were able to top up her savings so that she could purchase a sewing machine and invest in the business.
in 2023, her son was selected for secondary school sponsorship. His scholastic materials came out of the family's savings, and the school fees were met through sponsorship.
Molly said, “Thank you for giving this opportunity. Without your help, my son would have been wasted here in the village. You can now see for yourself, he is a very good and responsible boy. He is very helpful at home and respects us. Now his brother has joined him and we are now growing cassava and sesame to raise more funds for their school needs. Even our other children at Fundo Primary have received scholastic materials through your help. We are very motivated to educate our children. I get money by mending people’s clothes with the sewing machine. I save UGX 1,000 (30p) or more every day for our children’s fees. Without you help for education our family would not even afford to send our children to secondary school.”
