The children at Fundo School need to be provided with the basic materials for learning. This includes exercise books, pens and pencils, as well as some basic hygiene items such as soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. These items are supplied to the school by the charity on termly basis.
When we have visited Fundo, we have also loaded up suitcases with a range of reading resources for all abilities, educational posters for the classrooms, and wash packs for the children, and sports equipment like footballs, netballs, and volleyballs.
A recent initiative has seen us supply solar lamps to the teaching staff and to the children in the 2 top classes, P6 and P7. Everyone loved these! Fundo is close to the equator and so it is dark by 7pm every night, whatever the season. The lamps are charged during the day, allowing the children to do homework and the teachers to prepare lessons in the evenings. In a place where there is no electricity, these simple solar-powered lamps are a perfect solution.
Essential items such as exercise books and toothpaste are valued that children often take them when they go outside to play for fear of losing them.
Here are some of the resources, stationary, hygiene items and sports equipment and other items we were able to take with us on a recent visit.
The children in the older classes each received a solar lamp so they can get their homework done in the evenings. They were delighted!
When the P7 class were asked what is the best thing about their school, the number one answer was the teaching (great to hear!) and the second answer was the porridge!
The Importance of Nutrition
Many children arrive at Fundo Primary School hungry each day. They may also not have much food awaiting them when they go home at the end of the day.
For over a year now, we have provided the funding for every child to have breakfast at school every day. It is amazing to see the children streaming out of their classrooms when the bell goes at 11am and racing with cups and plates in hand to form a queue for the porridge. Each child in this community is assured of at least one nutritious meal each day, and this provision is enabling them to thrive and get the most from their learning.
