WATER STORAGE TANKS
We are delighted that the water project has now been completed increasing the storage capacity at Fundo School to over 40,000 litres. This is a significant moment as the lack of water was the reason our charity first began, and it will secure year-round access to clean water in Fundo, even during the dry seasons. Thank you to all who have helped to make this happen. Click on the link below for more details.
SOLAR PANELS
Until February 2023, Fundo Primary School had no electricity or source of power. Solar panels were installed on the roof of the school at that time (visible in the photo below). This is the first stage of supplying the school with a source of energy, with the plan to install more solar panels. Not only will this have a transformative impact on what can be done at Fundo School, but it will enable senior pupils to continue studying in the evenings in preparation for final exams and entry into secondary school. If you would like to give towards completing the purchase and installation of solar panels, we would be delighted. Thank you.
KITCHEN AREA
Providing a meal in school every day for every child has been a big focus or our fundraising over the last 6 months. It makes a huge difference to the quality of learning for the children if they have eaten properly at the start of the day, and it improves attendance rates. The children are each asked to bring a stick of firewood into school once-a-week as fuel for cooking the food, but until Summer 2025 there has been no kitchen area for the school cook to prepare the food. The kitchen has now been built by local construction workers and funded by the Fundo Foundation. The building includes 2 additional rooms to be used as a school medical room and for teacher accommodation.
IMPROVING FACILITIES
A library room has recently been created through the construction of a dividing wall. Further improvements are required to address over-crowded classrooms, to develop the outdoor spaces for sports, and other designated areas for specific subjects.
A new classroom block for the P1 class (the youngest class, aged 5-6) is a priority with the yearly intake usually between 150-200 children. Having all these children in a single classroom and with one teacher creates a very challenging learning environment, and many children drop out or attend sporadically as a result. The Fundo Foundation is funding a new Teaching Assistant at the school in 2025 as a first step, and plans for this construction project are currently in progress.
A church building will improve the links between the church and the school, as well as providing a facility large enough for whole school assemblies and a centre for community projects. A site adjacent to the school has been designated by the elders of the community. You can read more about it here.
